Reveil on November 1st

For several years, nearly half of the Flemish municipalities organize a consolation concert together with Reveil on November 1st. Local musicians, poets, and storytellers pay tribute to the deceased.

The consolation concerts traditionally take place between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., around sunset. The candles, either brought by the visitors or provided by the city, then beautifully come to life symbolically.

ABOUT REVEIL

Reveil aims to bring European mourning culture into the 21st century. We bring culture to the places where it is most needed. We do this in various ways:

We organize Concolation Concerts on November 1st at more than 150 cemeteries in Europe.

We store memories about deceased loved ones on our Story Vault.

We bring together the various organizations working around grief and organize annual conferences for this purpose among grief specialists and leaders.

We involve as many partners as possible in our quest and are happy to come and share our findings at your event.
WHERE IT BEGAN
In 2012, in the West Flemish town of Deerlijk, a couple of young guys died unexpectedly in very short succession. One of them was Robbie Van Eeckhout, rock god with the band Highway Jack.

Fellow musician Pieter Deknudt wrote a song for his late music buddy. He noticed that few plans were made to commemorate Robbie around Nov. 1.
He wanted to play the song at the cemetery but was afraid of antagonizing people. "Music? At the cemetery? Is that respectful?"
